Gender issues in science and education have a very high priority at Leibniz Universität Hannover and also at the MUSIC Graduate School. The university is characterized by its effective and approved equal opportunities and family-friendly policies. It has been awarded the “Audit familiengerechte Hochschule” accolade “family-friendly universities audit”.
In the overall assessment of tertiary educational institutions nationwide, Leibniz Universität Hannover has demonstrated outstanding achievements in four categories. In the rankings of professorships, post-doctorate degrees (habilitation theses), the increase in the proportion of women among professional, scientific and artistic staff as well as the increase in the percentage of women appointed to professorships, Leibniz Universität Hannover ranks among the top universities in Germany. Nearly 34% of doctorates at the university were awarded to women and just over 17% of professorships are held by women.
Current areas of focus are the implementation of various policies within the framework of the “Gleichstellungskonzept des Bundes und der Länder” (equal opportunities concept of the German Federation and the German federal states) and the research-oriented equal opportunities standards of the DFG (German Research Foundation). In addition, further teleworking stations have been created and a nursery is planned. There are several programmes and panels on the topics of careers in science, mentoring in science and business as well as women in leading positions. These include numerous activities in order to raise the percentage of women professors at top levels in science from 13 to 20%.
Leibniz Universität Hannover participates in the national MINT (mathematics, informatics, natural sciences, technology) pact and its objective is to increase the percentage of women in academia.
